Introduction to “The Ball Dropping” Lab

The purpose of the lab was to calculate and observe how much water would be displaced out of a container from a ball that is falling into the container from different height intervals. A door was used as a background to stick the tape measure on. A bracket was taped onto a door that would hold the ball and string together. A 500 mL water container was placed directly under the ball before every drop. After the ball was tied using sowing string, a lighter was used to burn the string at a certain height so the ball would drop without any hand movements or interference. After the ball was dropped, a certain mass of water was displaced, and then measured by subtracting the initial mass from the final mass. A graph was then produced which represented all of data that was gathered throughout the lab observations and with the data available an equation was developed for the experiment.
